From the Principal’s Desk

Last Thursday evening, around 100 CalCC students strapped on their skates and rollerblades for our P&F Rollerdrome Fundraising Night. It was wonderful to see students enjoying themselves, parents catching up on the sidelines, and our community spending time together beyond the school gates. Funds raised from the evening will contribute to our 2026 community project to create additional shaded eating areas for students.

A huge thank you to our P&F Committee for organising such a fantastic event and to everyone who came along and supported it.

For me, the night was particularly special because it was my first time attending as a parent. My five-year-old son, Gideon, strapped on a pair of roller skates for the very first time and bravely ventured onto the rink, with me shuffling behind him in the roles of cheer squad, coach, bouncer and recovery team.

That is one of the reasons community matters so much. Events like this remind us that CalCC is about far more than classrooms and learning. There is a reason our College vision begins with the word “Together”.

I also encourage families to RSVP for our upcoming Grandparents and Grandfriends Event on Wednesday 10 June. One of the joys of this event is that it is not limited to grandparents. Your child might invite an aunt or uncle, a family friend, an elderly neighbour, or the friendly person from church who always makes them feel welcome. Whoever they choose, we would love to welcome them into the life of our College community.

The Little Things That Build a Community

That is one of the reasons community matters so much. Events like this remind us that CalCC is about far more than classrooms and learning. There is a reason our College vision begins with the word “Together”.

This term, the Library hosted the CalCC Secondary Chess Tournament, where more than twenty Secondary students went head-to-head in a knockout competition that stretched their strategy, patience, and problem-solving skills.

Lunchtimes have been full of engaged players and spectators gathered around the boards, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere. Recently, we held the final match between Isaiah Brisbane and Jacob Wehba, and we extend our congratulations to Jacob for taking the win.

• Monday Lunch Chess Club continues from Week 7.
• Players can register each week and earn points for their wins.
• The club will also serve as a pathway for our top players, who may receive an invitation to represent CalCC at an inter-school chess competition next term.

Students interested in sharpening their skills are encouraged to speak with Library staff or join our Chess Club sessions.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Our younger learners also enjoyed a special celebration of reading through National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), joining millions of children and families around Australia to share the same story at the same time.

Last week, upper Primary attended a workshop presentation called Surf’s Up. Our School Counsellor, Fiona Cran, led the interactive workshop, which uses a beach and surfing theme to explore healthy and unhealthy stress.

The afternoon was a lot of fun as students learnt ways to manage stress and build resilience so they can get back into the waves of life after falling off the board! Key strategies were explored using the SURF acrostic:

S – Self Care
U – Uplifting Words
R – Reach Out
F – Faith

Students were able to practise some of these strategies during the session and even enjoyed a video of Mick Fanning fighting off a shark! They rotated around the room participating in different activities and took home their own Surf’s Up booklet. The students engaged wonderfully and brought their own wisdom and insights to share with others too.

Life is full of challenging waves that are not always within our control, but through Surf’s Up students discovered practical ways to navigate these challenges and keep learning how to surf the waves of life.

CalCC is preparing to welcome visiting students from Japan for our upcoming Study Tours in Term 3 — and we’re looking for enthusiastic and caring families to join the adventure as homestay hosts.

Hosting a student is a rewarding cultural experience for the whole family. Share everyday Aussie life, exchange cultures, try new foods and maybe even learn a few Japanese phrases along the way. Many host families say it becomes one of the most memorable experiences they have had, with friendships continuing long after the tour ends.

Students with a passion for problem-solving, creativity and teamwork are invited to join our Opti-MINDS Club this term.

The club explores challenges across language literature, science engineering, media communication and social sciences, helping students develop collaboration, innovation and critical thinking skills.
